New York City, the city that never sleeps, is the most bustling city of all. Abbreviated as NYC, New York City has all sorts of fun, exciting, adventure and leisure. Visited by approximately 47 million peoples each year, it is the one of the top tourist destinations of the world. Planning a trip to NYC and undecided on how to spend your time in there? Below is the list of some of the most popular attractions of NYC. 1. A night at Times Square Time Square has it all. It provides you all sorts of fun, entertainment, dining, shopping and tours to all parts of the city. Night life at Time Square is most vibrant and exciting and there are always events and attractions to be seen. Every time I visit USA, I never miss Times Square. There is always something happening here. Shopping at Times Square is a never ending fun as well with virtually every consumer good available. Below are some of the exciting places near by Times Square which needs no introduction and are worth visiting: - Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum (234 West 42nd @ 8th Avenue): A museum of lifelike wax figures of some of the world's hottest and beloved celebrities. - Ripley's Believe It or Not! (234 West 42nd Street): It is open 365 days a year and is a perfect attraction for tourist seeking the unbelievable. - M&M World (48th St. & Broadway): It has an interactive kid's area as well. - Planet Hollywood (1540 Broadway @ 45th Street): A world famous restaurant in the heart of Times Square with 800+ seating capacity and a wide variety of continental cuisine. - The World of Disney (55th Street @ 5th Ave): Meet favorite characters at Magical Meeting rooms. - Hard Rock Café (1501 Broadway @ 43rd Street). To reach Times Square, the best commute is Subway trains available from most of the location of NYC. You can also take Path to 33rd street at Manhattan Mall. 2. State of Liberty and Ellis Island: The first thing that comes to mind with the mention of New York is Statue of Liberty. A universal symbol of freedom and democracy, it is a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. It was dedicated on October 28, 1886. Planning ahead is essential as thousands of people visit this monument daily and reservations are necessary and limited. Pedestal tickets are limited to 3000 per day. Ellis Island: From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island was the gateway for millions of immigrants to USA. Since 1990, island is converted to a museum of immigration as a part of Statue of Liberty National Monument. Most of the island is a part of New Jersey State. It is one of the famous attractions of New York City. Through this island ancestors of millions of Americans passed to their new home in America. The ferry to Statue of Liberty provides transportation to Ellis Island. 3. Broadway theater Shows: Broadway theatre, simply knows as Broadway, is a popular tourist attraction in New York City, New York. There are close to 40 large Theatre each housing 500 seats or more. The Lion King and Mamma Mia shows are world famous. Many theatres offer special student rate or lottery tickets also. Some theatre sells standing room tickets also to help ensure that their theatres are full and generate income as high as possible. Tickets can be brought from TKTS (pronounced "Tee-Kay Tee-Ess", not "tickets") booths and tickets are offered at a discount of 25%-50% of the face value. These booth were previously knows as Half-price booths. TKTS booths are at three locations. One is in Duffy Square at 47th Street and Broadway, the north end of Times Square. Second is in lower Manhattan at South Street Seaport while the third is at Jay St. and Myrtle St. Promenade in Downtown Brooklyn. 4. Downtown Manhattan: Area below 16th Street is defined as Downtown Manhattan and gives a unique experience to visitors. Below are some of the best attractions that Downtown Manhattan has to offer. Always reserve a day or two for these. - WTC Ground Zero: It emerged from the rubble of twin towers after 11-Sep attacks. Annually, millions comes to pay tribute at the site. A new WTC building is under construction. Currently the perimeter of Ground Zero is accessible to the public. The Tribute Center offers tours around the perimeter, and provides visitors with an accurate account of what the community endured during the attacks. - Battery Park: This waterfront park is located in 23acre and is one of New York's oldest and largest public open spaces in Downtown Manhattan. Over four million people from around the world annually visit the park. It's also the entry gate for Statue of Liberty. Outdoor shows and concerts are plentiful during the summer. Castle Clinton, built as a fort in 1807, was later redesigned as the first U.S. monument to World War I veterans. The park is a great place for an outdoor picnic or walking tour. Other famous attractions in Downtown Manhattan are Wall Street, New York Stock Exchange and NYSE bull. To reach Downtown Manhattan, take Path trains to WTC (World trade center) station and Subway are available to Wall Street. 5. Empire State Building (350, 5th Ave): The Empire State Building celebrated its 75th Anniversary on May 1, 2006. It was officially opened on May 1, 1931 by President Hoover. The building, famous for its signature white lights, is approximately 1,453 feet from the base to the top of the lightning rod. 10-20 thousands people visit the Empire State Building daily and last elevator goes up at 1:15pm. So it's necessary to plan in advance. Only 86th and 102nd floor open for visitors and observatory is open till 2am every night for spectacular skyline and night sky views. Tickets can be purchased from 2nd floor of the building but usually there is long line there and sometimes the wait can be as long as 2hours. Tickets can also be purchased online from official website of Empire state Building (http://www.esbnyc.com) at no additional cost. 6. Grand Central Terminal - Just not tracks: This arts building was first opened in 1913 and has under went a massive restoration to restore it to its former glory. This destination of visitors is a through-way for millions for commuters every week. With dining concourse and shops available from 8am from 9pm, there's more to Grand Central than train tracks. Museums - A world in itself: NYC is home to world class museums. Weather its art, architecture, photography, natural history, technology, you name it and NYC has a museum of it. Among all the museums NYC has to offer, the famous museums are Bodies, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Hispanic Society of America and King Tut Exhibition. Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest museums in the world. Most city travels run guided tours to most of the museums with a single ticket/pass based upon the package. 8. Parks - A Greener World: New York City is home to some of the best park. Famous parks of NYC include Central Park in Manhattan (843 acres), Bronx Park in Bronx (718 acres) and Marine Park in Brooklyn (798 acres). Central Park, completed in 1873, attracts twenty-five million visitors each year. Central park is home to well known sculptures and attractions including zoo, Alice in Wonderland Statue (near East 75th/76th Streets), Angel in the Water Fountain (72nd Street) and Strawberry Fields. It also holds a variety of shows and events through out the year. Bronx Park, eight largest park of NYC, is home to Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo. Bronx Park houses wild flora and fauna over a two mile stretch. Marine Park, house to some 500 different marine species, is created as a great leisure and training and research centre. The experience at its underwater restaurant is unforgettable. 9. NYC City tours - Hip-on Hip-off: Popularly known as hip-on, hip-off tours, these city bus tours are best way to travel around NYC. Some tour packages also include activities such as harbor cruises, museum visits, helicopter tours and shopping day trips. Most of the tour buses are double decker buses accompanied with a guide guiding you through out the tour. Helicopter tours are a hit as they offer the opportunity to feel Manhattan sky line from close. Bird's eye views of the Statue of Liberty, Central park and NYC harbor is really awesome. Also, one-day escorted bus tours are available to Washington D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia. 10. Last but not the least: NYC is not just about these. It's definitely more than that. Below are some more places which are worth visiting and attracts millions of tourist each year. - Union Square: It is noted for impressive statue of great personalities like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Mahatma Gandhi. - Rockefeller Center: Popular for the largest Christmas tree in the world, it is basically the complex of buildings and plazas between 47th and 50th Streets and 5th and 7th Avenues. It houses NBC Studios, Today Show, Saturday Night Live and many more. It also hosts ice skating in winter season. - Brooklyn Bridge: it was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was built in late 19 century. It offers a good view of the East River, Manhattan and Brooklyn. - Madison square garden: Popularly know as MSG, this world famous arena is located in the heart of NYC and is at walking distance from Time Square. It hosts approximately 320 events a year on average with events like WWE, RAW, New York Rangers (NHL), NBA and musical concerts. - Restaurants: Time Warner Center has two of the New York's best and expensive dining rooms, namely, Per se and Namesake Sushi Restaurants. Time Warner Center is located at Columbus Circle near Central Park. There are many other good restaurants on Columbus Circle as well. Alistair Cooke had rightly said about New York that "New York is the biggest collection of villages in the world". NYC is waiting for you. Have a nice and safe trip. |
